Lord Hanuman Story
In the last newsletter, Lord Hanuman began his great journey across the ocean with full faith in Lord Ram and one magnificent leap.
After thanking Mount Mainaka for his offer of hospitality, Sri Hanuman continued his journey. The celestials were very impressed with Hanumans's feat but wanted to test him.
(The celestials were very aware
of Hanuman's capabilities - spiritual and physical. While it may appear to be unkind, these tests were done in order to further highlight Hanuman's greatness.)
In the ocean, along Hanuman's flight path, lived an old devata named Surasa. She had obtained infinite power and boons from Lord Brahma through
great penance. Though she was leading a retired life, the celestials approached Surasa and requested her to test Hanuman's power.
With a plan in mind, Surasa transformed into a gigantic serpent - miles in length and ferocious looking with huge jaws and sharp teeth. Then she appeared from under the water and charged towards Hanuman!
Hanuman felt no fear. In his deep yogic trance, Hanuman could easily observe that this serpent was a devata merely disguised as a demoness.
The serpent opened her mouth and told Hanuman that per Brahma's boon anything in front of her open mouth must enter it. Positioned perfectly in front of Hanuman with her mouth open, Surasa ordered Hanuman to come into her mouth!
Will be continued...
